The Mitfahrer*innenbankerl is an innovative solution designed supplement the mobility options for those places where public transport connections are inadequate. Signs attached to colour-coded benches invite users to select a desired destination in order to be taken in the appropriate direction by car drivers who are happy to stop. To make the waiting time more productive, the bench also doubles as a fitness station, promoting the idea of staying active while waiting.
The concept was developed for Oberzeiring, a market town in Austria, which was declared one of the remote locations as part of the
Human Cities/SMOTIES project.
The prototype built in 2022 is still actively used by local residents today.
The broader goal of the concept is to establish a network across various locations in the region, fostering communication and facilitating journey planning.
